Rent-A-Santa Brings Holiday Cheer, Fundraiser To DVC Of SCV -- December 3, 2014

Ed. Note: Rent-A-Santa’s are not the real Santa Claus. They are Santa’s helpers who help him out by visiting children while Santa works in his shop in the North Pole. The Rent-A-Santa’s have special instructions to tell Santa what children wish to receive for Christmas so Santa can make them special at his shop.

For decades, Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and their family have visited the Santa Clarita Valley community to raise money for various charities.

Rent-A-Santa is an annual “friend-raiser” that has benefitted organizations including Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley.

“It’s a fun friend-raiser because it make friends in the community,” said Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley Board Member Barbara S. Cochran, who is also a member of the Zonta Club of SCV.

This year, the Domestic Violence Center of Santa Clarita Valley will benefit from the fundraiser, for the first time since the fundraiser began.

“The Zonta Club decided to give up the fundraiser because it wasn’t bringing in enough money,” Cochran said. “It brings in about $2,000-4,000.”

Various Santa Clarita Valley community members volunteer to dress up as Santa Claus for thefundraiser.

“Duane Harte is one of our Santa’s and has been doing it for years,” Cochran said. “Duane dressed as Santa at the Light Up Main Street event when they lit the tree in front of the library. We try to bring good cheer to families.”

The Rent-A-Santa event does not only provide Santa’s but Mrs. Claus and elves can attend Christmasparties, community and business events, too.

“A lot of times when there are tiny children, they’re afraid of Santa and when Mrs Claus goes along, she can calm the child down,” Cochran said. “They’ll sit on her lap and gradually the child moves to Santa’s lap. It’s really cute.”

More than 20 people have already signed up to have Santa Claus and his family at their holiday event, Cochran said.

“If the husband who is dressed up as Santa has the wife and she’s game, she can dress as Mrs. Claus,” Cochran said. “If they have kids, they can dress as elves. It’s a family affair,  most visits are to families.”

Carousel Ranch, Santa Clarita Karate and TPC Valencia are just a couple organizations and businesses that have booked Santa’s for their events.

To Rent-A-Santa, tax-deductible prices are $100 for one hour, $150 for two hours and if you want Santa for long, it’s $100 for every hour after that.

“As long as people call and I have the Santa’s and the Mrs. Claus’, we can cover as many as 50 visits,” Cochran said.
